On Thursday, March 22nd at 9am, meet up at the Museum and we'll hop on a private bus to Oakland, where we'll meet up with Era and Don Farnsworth, the artists/owners of Magnolia Editions, and later in the day, artist Michelle Wilson in her studio. At our first stop at Magnolia Editions, we'll be treated to a tour of the main studio, where top artists from around the country and around the globe come to access to the state-of-the-art, traditional and electronic, large-scale, printmaking and papermaking facilties, and artistic and technical expertise that Magnloia Editions has been providing since they opened in 1981.
After a casual lunch at a local eatery, (TBA soon!) we'll jump back on the bus and head to the nearby studio of artist Michelle Wilson. Wilson is a papermaker, printmaker, book and installation artist. The paper she makes is typically grown from pants she grows herself, or invasive plants that she harvests, making her studio practice a means of clearing habitate space for native ecology. Wilson's imprint and blog is Rocinante Press, and her extensive teaching experience includes San Francisco State University, Bryn Mawr College, Moore College of Art and Design, San Jose ICA Print Center, SJSU, UC Berkeley, Stanford, and Magnolia Editions, just to name a few!
We think it's safe to say that this day will give you a tremendous appreciation for the art and craft of printmaking, papermaking, and artist's books, for one, and you'll also discover incredible techniques you might never imagine! We hope you can join us. The price includes lunch and transportation. We expect to return to Sonoma around 5pm. Space is limited!
